Year 3
Narrative unit 1: Stories with familiar settings.
Watch extracts from DVDs and evaluate the atmosphere and how it is created.
Non-fiction unit 1: Reports
Use broadcast information that links to other areas of the curriculum e.g. teeth and eating. Watch, analyse and make notes.
Non-fiction unit 2: – Instructional texts
Use extracts from art TV programmes that have ‘make and do’ sections. Download from the programme website an instructional fact sheet for the item viewed. Compare and contrast. Also look at comic and magazine instruction pages and decide which are the easiest to follow. Record instructions using a digital video camera
Year 4
Narrative unit 2: Stories set in imaginary worlds
Create fantasy settings using photo editing software (builds on yr3 narrative unit 1)
Narrative unit 4: Stories which raise issues/dilemmas
Watch an extract from TV or video which shows a character facing a dilemma. Talk about how mood and atmosphere are created through music, images and words.
Narrative unit 5 – plays
The children use ICT to record their own plays.
Non-fiction unit 1: newspapers/magazines
Watch an extract from a visual text containing a clear narrative sequence e.g. characters saved from peril by a superhero. Collect still images to sequence events and take quotations from the film. Use ICT to produce newspaper articles.
Non-fiction unit 3: explanation
The Shirt Maker. Use the film stimulus to write an explanation of the shirt machine.
Non-fiction unit 4 Persuasive texts
Use paper based and persuasive texts. Use film trailers – identify elements that would persuade the audience to see a film. Plan a trailer; write a voice over script using music, words and images.
